What exactly is an MP3?
A MP3 is a compressed file format, used to store digital audio. It uses advanced compression techniques to reduce the size of an audio file, while still retaining the sound quality to a near perfect level. On average, a 1MB MP3 file can store 1 minute of music, whereas a WAV file of the same length would be around 10MB! The term 'MP3' is short for 'MPEG-1 Layer 3', and MPEG is an acronym which stands for 'Moving Picture Expert Group', but you don't need to worry about all these terms. The only thing you need to know is that MP3 is a file format, which usually contains near CD-quality music, that you can download from the Internet. MP3 files are identifiable by their '.mp3' file extension.
Where can I get MP3 files / Is MP3 legal? MP3 files can be found in abundance on the Internet. However, many MP3 files are illegal, as they violate copyright laws. The MP3 format itself is perfectly legal, and as long as the copyright holder of a piece of music has given permission to download and play the song, there is no problem. It is also fine for you to make MP3s of your own CDs, just as you are allowed to make taped copies, as long as you do not distribute them to others. You can use MP3 search engines, such as Musicgrab.com, to find MP3s files, but you should always use your own discretion when downloading the files, as some may be illegal. |
